Pre-operative care with the new surgical treatment of Pectus Excavatum: Pectus Up

Preparation for surgery with the Pectus Up Surgery Kit

There are some details to bear in mind prior to the patient receiving surgical treatment for Pectus Excavatum. As with any surgery involving anaesthesia, the operation comes with certain risks which the surgeon will carefully explain. It is also necessary to consider certain warnings, amongst which the following are noteworthy:

  • The surgeon must be informed of any medicine being taken, as some types may interfere with the anaesthesia or lead to complications. Drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen can cause haemorrhaging.
  • Tobacco contributes to the development of, amongst others, pulmonary and cardiac problems. Additionally, it complicates wound healing. The tissue requires oxygen to heal properly and tobacco significantly reduces the quantity reaching it.
