For 19 and 20 October 2017, Barcelona has been the venue of an international meeting between expert surgeons in chest wall deformities treatment, involving the presence of Taulinoplastia – Pectus Up.

Several experiences have been introduced before more than 70 surgeons with a wide expertise in Pectus Excavatum and Pectus Carinatum treatment, either with invasive and minimally invasive techniques. The Taulinoplastia – Pectus Up has been one of the methods presented for the public, getting a remarkable role as a real alternative facing the techniques that have been used so far.

The event was organized by the Pediatric Surgery Department at University Hospital Vall d’Hebron, by the surgeon responsible, Dr. Manuel López Paredes, with the cooperation of Dr. Laureano Molins, head of Thoracic Surgery Department at Hospital Clínic and at Hospital Sagrat Cor of Barcelona (both belonging to Quirón Group).

The innovative technique which was developed by Ventura Medical Technologies in cooperation with Hospital Parc Taulí, where the idea was born, has currently another surgical version.

The minimally invasive method is regularly used to surgically repair the Pectus Excavatum with an extrathoracic approach, though the same external lift system, also with an extrathoracic device, the Pectus Plate, is used to facilitate surgeries with the Nuss method, developed by Dr. Donald Nuss in 1997.

The day before this event, fifty surgeons specialised in Pectus Excavatum treatment took part in the 1st International Workshop on Taulinoplastia which was held in Parc Taulí Hospital and directed by Dr. Bernardo Núñez, Dr. Nuria Brun and Dr. Laureano Molins.

This workshop was attended by surgeons from several hospitals of Catalonia, Madrid, San Sebastián, Majorca, Saragossa… as well as international professionals coming from Peru, Russia, United Kingdom and Morocco, among other assistants.

It proved to be a very participative session in which the interest for this new surgical technique for Pectus Excavatum treatment has been significant among all attendees. The planning of the meeting allowed introducing the experiences and expertise with this innovative extrathoracic method, as well as practicing with the Pectus Up Surgery Kit.

The workshop success was followed with a decision of holding this activity once a year, thus allowing the training for all those surgeons interested in offering their patients a new method, less painful, with an easier recovery and with many more advantages than previous ones.
