Two patients with Pectus Excavatum have undergone surgeries with the new Pectus Up technique at Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid.
Dr. Andrés Varela, Head of the Thoracic Surgery Service in Hospital Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda, Hospital Quirónsalud and Hospital La Luz, all in Madrid (Spain), has successfully operated on two new patients affected by Pectus Excavatum with the Pectus Up technique. This time, surgeries have been performed on a 46 year-old adult patient and a 20 year-old young man, both with highly successful results.
The Pectus Up is an extrathoracic implant for the correction of Pectus Excavatum through a minimally invasive approach, which considerably reduces the complexity and risks of the surgery. Among many of its advantages, we can point out that it is easy to implant, that it causes less pain than traditional techniques and that it requires fewer hospitalization days, so the patient experiences a rapid postoperative recovery.
The implant, developed by Ventura Medical Technologies, was designed in 2012, with a first version aimed at children and teens. Since then, it has undergone several stages of evolution and, thanks largely to the collaboration of Dr. Varela in the improvements introduced in the technique, the target age range has been extended to non-pediatric patients, and so has been the typological diversity of the condition among the candidates for this kind of surgery. At the present time, Dr. Varela is the surgeon that has performed most Pectus Up surgical interventions in Spain and, by the end of May; he will introduce the technique at the X SECT Congress, of the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery.
Ventura Medical Technologies’ Pectus Up is currently marketed in Spain, France and Portugal, in Europe, and in Colombia, Chile and Mexico in Latin America. Soon it will also be available in Peru and Morocco, thereby strengthening itself as a sound alternative to the traditional techniques for the fixing of the Pectus Excavatum.
