Dr. Daniel Munguía, a surgeon from Mexico, and the distribution company of medical devices Nnova Mederi, take part in a surgery by Dr. Laureano Molins.

The professionals of Mexico took part in a surgical session performed by Dr. Laureano Molins,  a thoracic surgeon of the Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor in Barcelona (Spain), and also in a theoretical and practical session, with a simulation of the Pectus Up technique in an inanimate model, performed by staff from Ventura Medical Technologies as part of the training program. The aim of this program was to train professionals who will contribute to introduce this new surgical procedure in Mexico and, in turn, will train the surgeons interested in treating their patients affected by Pectus Excavatum with the Pectus Up.

Dr. Daniel Alejandro Munguía-Canales, who joined the surgery, is the manager of the Thoracic Surgery-Pulmonary Transplant area of the Centro Médico Nacional Siglo XXI of the Social Security Mexican Institute, of chest surgery area at the regional hospital of high specialty ISSSTE Bicentenary of independence, México State Tultitlán, as well as the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers, and member of private hospitals. He is also a member of several scientific societies such as the EACTS (European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery).

The surgical session, which was also attended by Dr. Ángel Villanueva Mateo, pediatric surgeon of the Donostia University Hospital of Osakidetza, in Spain, took place at the Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor in Barcelona, where Molins, head of the Thoracic Surgery Service, operated on a 42 year-old patient affected by Pectus Excavatum, who travelled to Barcelona from Navarra, in northern Spain, to be treated with the new Pectus Up method.

Dr. Munguía had participated last December in the First International Training Workshop in Pectus Up technique, held in Monterrey, Mexico, which was promoted by Dr. Fernando Montes Tapia, pediatric surgeon of the University Hospital Dr. José Eleuterio González, and sponsored by the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) and Ventura Medical Technologies. At the workshop, Dr. Montes operated on a Pectus Excavatum patient together with Dr. Manuel Wong Jaen, a thoracic pediatric surgeon in the same hospital. The surgery was mentored by Professor Manuel López Paredes, head pediatric surgery at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona.

The Pectus Up, developed by Ventura Medical Technologies, offers a minimally invasive solution for the treatment of the Pectus Excavatum. This technique has provided a major technological innovation in the field of thoracic surgery for the treatment of this deformity, since this is an extrathoracic method that significantly reduces the complexity and the risks of the surgery. Recovery time is shorter and patients treated with this new technique highlight the slight presence of pain and quick return to daily life. Currently, the product is being marketed in Europe and also in Colombia and, from now on, with the participation of Nnova Mederi and Drs. Munguía, Montes and Wong, the Pectus Up will also become a reality in Mexico.
