Dr. Bernardo Núñez, Pediatric Surgery Service Coordinator in Hospital Parc Taulí in Sabadell (Barcelona), is conducting a training process in the innovative Taulinoplastia surgical technique for several surgeons specialized in thoracic deformities, interested in the Pectus Up Surgery Kit.
Last June, Dr. Núñez attended Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid to take part in the first two surgeries with Dr. Andrés Varela, head of Thoracic Surgery Service in this hospital. After this training process, Dr. Varela has already operated on two more patients with Taulinoplastia and scheduled more surgeries for the next months.
Taulí is the first worldwide hospital using the Pectus Up Surgery Kit, this innovative extrathoracic implant developed by Ventura Medical Technologies, to treat 30 patients affected by Pectus Excavatum.
Taulinoplastia consists of the Pectus Up placement in the sternum to fix the thoracic sinking without the need of entering the chest cavity. In turn, a variation of this implant —the Pectus Plate— is also used to raise the ribcage in those cases where surgeon chooses other more invasive procedures, thus minimizing injury risk in internal organs of the chest by supplementing the surgery with this new device version.
In Taulí hospital, with Dr. Núñez, thirty patients have been operated on to repair their Pectus Excavatum with the Taulinoplastia, and the implant has also been removed to ten of them at the end of the time set for recovery.
Dr. Bernardo Núñez also treats patients in Hospital General de Catalunya, belonging to Quirónsalud Group, is a professional with extensive experience in this technique, since he took part in the project as a researcher since the clinical trial test.
