Innovative extrathoracic approach offers a new alternative for correcting Pectus Excavatum in patients
The Pectus Up® surgical technique continues its international expansion and takes an important step in its introduction in the United Arab Emirates, with the performance of the first surgery in Dubai. Dr. Bassil Alzamkan, one of the most renowned thoracic surgeons in the region, has recently completed specialized training in Italy that has enabled him to apply this innovative, minimally invasive surgical solution to his patients in the United Arab Emirates.
Dr. Alzamkan’s training began with the observation of a live surgery in Sicily, Italy, alongside Dr. Calogero Porrello, a thoracic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience and over 4,000 chest wall deformity procedures, and one of Europe’s leading experts in the Pectus Up® technique. Subsequently, Dr. Alzamkan who has more than 30 years of professional experience and over 4,500 cardiothoracic surgeries, being board-certified in Germany, initiated his practical training to implement the technique in his country.
As a result of this preparation, the first successful Pectus Up® intervention in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) has already been carried out, specifically at the Saudi German Hospital Dubai (SGHD). The surgery, performed by Dr. Porrello and Dr. Alzamkan, was carried out on an 11-year-old Egyptian girl with severe Pectus Excavatum. The procedure was a success, achieving effective correction of the deformity and a fast recovery, with excellent functional and aesthetic outcomes.
This expansion has been made possible thanks to the collaboration with Zahrawi Group, Ventura Medical Technologies’ regional partner. Both organizations have worked together throughout the implementation and training process in Dubai.
Through the training of new professionals and collaboration with specialized centers, the adoption of the Pectus Up® technique (also known as Taulinoplasty) in new territories is already a reality, improving patients’ quality of life with a minimally invasive solution that corrects Pectus Excavatum through a totally extrathoracic technique.
