Thoracic surgery experts from several regions in Spain are trained with Dr. Andrés Varela de Ugarte  in Pectus Up Surgery Kit, the innovative surgical technique for Pectus Excavatum treatment.

Last 15 and 16 February, Dr. Valera, Thoracic Surgery Head in Madrid’s Hospital Puerta de Hierro, successfully operated on four patients affected by Pectus Excavatum with the Pectus Up, an implant allowing to fix this pathology with a minimally invasive procedure.

A total of nine patients have already corrected their Pectus Excavatum with this new surgical method named Taulinoplastia in this hospital located in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, in Spain.

This time, Dr. Varela made a morphological adaptation of the Pectus Up implant to each patient’s specific features, by curving the plate just before fixing it to the sternum, thus obtaining a variation of a constantly developing surgical method.

All four surgeries were also two training sessions for several surgeons, both thoracic and pediatric, from other hospitals in Spain, specifically from Zaragoza and Palma de Mallorca, who participated in the surgeries in vivo along with the thoracic surgery team of Hospital Puerta de Hierro.

The surgeries were attended from Palma de Mallorca by Dr. Ángel Francisco Carvajal Carrasco, head of the Thoracic Surgery Service in University Hospital Son Espases, and Dr. Concepción Barceló, pediatric surgery specialist at the same hospital.

Dr. Raúl Embún, a thoracic surgery specialist, also took part in the interventions. Dr. Embún is a member of the Thoracic Surgery Service in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Aragon, and provides assistance in Hospital Miguel Servet and University Hospital Lozano Blesa, both in Zaragoza.

The Taulinoplastia, this new surgical technique, developed by Ventura Medical Technologies in collaboration with Sabadell’s Hospital Parc Taulí (Barcelona), brings many advantages for the patients, leads to fewer complications both intra- and postoperative and produces less pain, therefore the patient benefits from a better recovery. Besides, the technique is not excessively complex and does not require a high skill level, even though a continuous training is needed by the surgeon.
