First patients with Pectus Excavatum operated with the Pectus Up procedure in different hospitals in Costa Rica.
During the first days of January, several patients with Pectus Excavatum in Costa Rica were successfully operated on using the Pectus Up procedure. This represents a medical breakthrough for thoracic and paediatric surgeons in the country, as it allows people affected by this deformity, which is also known as sunken chest, to be treated completely extrathoracically.
The Pectus Up, developed by the Spanish company Ventura Medical Technologies, is a very minimally invasive technique, not very complex, with no complications during the intervention, with little post-operative pain and with a quick recovery, allowing patients to improve their quality of life.
A very important fact for the health of Costa Rican patients affected by this condition is that the novel Pectus Up technique has been introduced into clinical practice in different hospitals in the country, such as the Metropolitan Hospital and the Calderon Guardia Hospital. This marked an important milestone in the country’s healthcare system.
The patients were operated on by the team of Dr. Andrea Mata Blanco, thoracic surgeon at the Calderón Guardia Hospital and Dr. Christian Mauricio Dam Arce, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospital. They were assisted by Dr. Patricio Herrera, a paediatric surgeon from Chile who is an expert in this type of procedure.
The collaboration between the medical community from different sectors, both public and private, and Sumedical as the distributor, has made it possible to carry out these first interventions, which are only the beginning of a series of successful treatments.
This joint commitment demostrates Costa Rica’s commitment to progress in medical care and to the constant search for innovative solutions and cutting-edge technology.
Sumedical, a partner of Ventura Medical Technologies, is a key player in making the innovative Pectus Up technology avaiable throughout Costa Rica.
